The M is for Motivation

Well I had a good weekend. Friday I hung out with Dan and we enjoyed some Chinese food and Unbreakable. That was a solid movie and it featured two of my favorite actors, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. You can't go wrong with that combination in my book (see also: Pulp Fiction, Die Hard With a Vengeance).

Saturday was supposed to be the day where I got motivated and got some stuff done, but of course that didn't happen! Instead I was a total bum and just slacked off all day, frequently checking baseball web sites for any news on the Sammy Sosa situation. The aforementioned Dan was supposed to come over that night to hang out with Chad and me but the wife came home so nothing was done. I ended up watching the Bulls game and playing Resident Evil 4 for like 3 hours. That game is flat-out awesome, although I do miss the series staples, zombies and Umbrella. The gameplay definitely makes up for that, however.

On Sunday, while I did wake up late (i.e., after 12 noon) I was also very motivated and got a lot done. After going grocery shopping I immediately began to wash the dishes while watching Shaun of the Dead (which is a great movie by the way). Now, I have to tell you, we had a big ol' pile of stinking dishes just festering in the kitchen for a long time, so it was quite a job but it had to be done. Once I finished with the dishes, took out the garbage, and cleaned up a little around the kitchen, I felt like a million bucks. Now I no longer get a disgusted feeling when I walk into that room. (Well, except when I get near the garbage disposal because STAR still hasn't fixed that and it's starting to smell... yuck!)

At some point during the night I talked at length with my buddy Mike (from Schaumburg) about a prospective new job he might get at a company in Buffalo Grove called ASAP Software. It sounds like an impressive company and a slick place to work. I think he would do a fine job there and I might give that place a look once I get into job hunt mode. Speaking of which, I updated my resume last night and sent it to my sister (who works in human resources) for perusal. The NIU job fair is next week and I am not looking forward to piling the search for employment on top of school and work, but it has to be done.

Well I'd better wrap this off. I have a lot to accomplish today. Thankfully my good pal Jack Bauer is stopping by for a visit tonight, and he might be bringing along an old acquaintence from work. :-)

So long, Sosa?

It appears that Sammy Sosa is headed to Baltimore. The supposed deal is for Jerry Hairston, Jr. and two minor league prospects, but we'll have to see if Jim Hendry has something else up his sleeves.

The next few days ought to be really interesting...

Generic motivational blog post

I've been reading Mikey's blog and chatting with him a bit in the past few weeks and sometimes I sense that he is kind of down about grad school. Well Mikey—and everyone else out there—I just wanna remind you to keep your chin up and just keep plugging along. Even if your current school/job/career/lunch isn't working out, that's okay, you'll adapt to whatever life should bring. Remember that, when you're on your deathbed, you won't be judging the worth of your life based on a few months or years when you're still young.

I don't know what credentials I have to be giving out motivational advice, but I'm sure you can find this same advice in a book, a Tony Robbins seminar, or a fortune cookie near you, so I guess I'm just reinforcing it.

That is all. Peace on Earth, brothas.

Arrrrrgh!

Why do I find it so hard to go to bed before 3 AM?!

At least I don't have to get up early for class today. So instead of sleeping until 8 and then taking 4 hours worth of naps throughout the day, I will simply just sleep until noon and get it over with.

(I'm gonna be in deep shit when I have to get a 9-5 job!)

Tuesdays with Marky

Ah, it's Tuesday at just past noon, and I just woke up! While I really don't like waking up that late, my body has been conditioned to do so by a lazy-ass winter break and I still haven't reversed that. I probably won't, either, seeing as I have Tuesdays and Thursdays off, so I will probably be alternating between waking up at 8:30 and 11:30. I should make some kind of resolution to get back to normalcy, but the problem is I have been chatting online past midnight the last month and a half and it's tough to quit that, not because I love chatting but because of who I'm chatting with.

Anyway, I plan to at least be semi-productive today. I have a little bit of reading and homework I should get done and I have to run some errands—including buying my one textbook of the semester. If Billy were here, he'd be bitching about how his book bill is ten times mine... we miss ya Billy! :-(

Anyway, I'm also going to sign up for a raquetball intramural thing, assuming it doesn't conflict with my class or the dynamic duo of 24/Alias. I need to get over to the rec and this would definitely force me to do so on a regular basis. Plus I love racquetball!

I signed up for a couple of those facebook sites yesterday and we'll see how long I stay interested in that. It was weird looking up people I graduated with because that seems like such ancient history.

Well it's time to shower... don't want to be stinky all day! Later peeps...

Cyber-sexual inadequacy

http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/cyber.php

This is incredibly funny nerd/sex humor. Just be careful that you don't fall out of your chair laughing!

I used to love snow...

...and then I turned 12. Seriously, I hate it now. As a kid it's fun to play in and, on rare occasions, actually grants you an unexpected day or two off from school. As soon as you gain responsibility as a young adult, however, that changes. First comes the shoveling, which is awful because it is hard to do it in a way that doesn't put strain on one's back (and my back isn't in the best of shape) and because it just sucks being out in the cold for the amount of time it takes to shovel the driveway, sidewalk, and the back of the house. And then when you turn 16 there's driving in the snow, which is just as unpleasant. When it's snowing you not only have to drive much slower than usual but you also have to clear the ice and snow off your car and then drive with limited visibility. Thank God I at least have a good heater in my car!

The only good thing about being outside in the cold and snow now is how awesome it makes that mug of hot chocolate or coffee taste. This might change one I have kids of my own to play in the snow with, but that's a long way off.

So anyway, what precipitated the above paragraphs was the massive snowstorm that blew through here last Friday and Saturday. I had the pleasure of driving from DeKalb to Schaumburg through it and I can tell you there's no way I would have made that trip had I known how bad the streets were. Of course I was dumb enough to leave when it was dark out, so visibility was almost nothing by default. Then I could barely see out my windshield for the first half-hour, and even after that the streets were covered with slippery snow and I couldn't make out where a given lane ended or began. I only lost control of my car once and it was only for a second, thankfully. That said, I long for the days in the summer when we are whining about how hot it is.

The reason I left as late as I did on Friday was because I went over to Tim's house for a few hours. We played a game of baseball on the PS2 and watched some Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes over a plate of our old dorm favorite, pizza nuggets! Certainly brought back some good memories and we had a good time. Hopefully I get a chance to hang out with him more in the coming weeks and months, before he gets hitched!

Saturday featured a trip to the Fry's Electronics store, a few hours at my Grandparents' house to visit with them and my Uncle who lives in Boston (speaking of snow...), and hanging out at Mike's house with Ahmad to watch the Bulls beat the Pistons. (Great game, by the way.) Then Nick stopped by my house and we just kind of chatted, although my gregarious dad did most of the talking.

After Nick left I beat Resident Evil Zero. Being a huge Resident Evil fanboy, I really enjoyed this game, quite like I enjoyed the remake of the first*. Zero was probably a notch under the remake, due mostly to somewhat inferior story and gameplay, as well as the annoying lack of item boxes. It was a very worthwhile playthrough, though, and thankfully was not dragged out. (The 12+ hours it took me to beat the game are actually on the longer end of the scale when it comes to the average time to beat the game on one's first playthrough.) Now I intend on beating Resident Evil: Code Veronica X so that I will have beaten all of the main Resident Evil games preceding Resident Evil 4, which I picked up last week. That game has been hailed as one of the best ever, so I am really drooling with anticipation to play it. If it manages to be even marginally better than the ones I've already played then I'm in for a treat!

Speaking of Resident Evil, I have to say I'm kind of surprised to see Gamecube copies of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis going for $50-$125 on Ebay. Now, I know that these are good games and that they are no longer in print, but come on! These prices are ridiculous, especially for games that were ported without upgrades from older systems. That being said, I have to smile thanks to the fact that I not only own both of these games but bought them when they came out for $30 each, which was considered by many to be a rip-off at the time. Well, who's laughing now? Muahahahaha! (And no, I do not intend to sell either game now or at any point in the future.)

On Sunday I really just watched football and that was about it. Anything else that I did isn't worthy of appearing in this entry, so don't worry about missing out on important details of my life.

The Cubs Convention was this past weekend but there was really no news to report, so I will refrain from making any comments about it because they'd simply be repeating what I've already said in the past. I will say that I alternate between being optimistic and pessimistic about the coming season. Hopefully the Cubs will alleviate my worries with their play on the field!

Wow, I've spent the last half-hour concocting this brew of a post. I don't think there's really anything else I need to add at this point, at least not off the top of my head. Rest assured, however, that if I think of anything it will end up right here!

-Mark

*-Dan I'm making a note of our agreement regarding this game. Just don't slack off, because March 1st will arrive sooner than you think!

I knew it

As soon as I praise the Bulls in the hallowed pages of this blog their long winning streak ends. Well, that's it—nothing more than cursory references to the team as long as they are still in things.

(Yes, I am way too superstitious.)

Back to the grind

Well, after a remarkably uneventful 38 day winter break, it's back to school for the spring semester. (I must say, calling it the spring semester when it's this fucking cold out really seems out of place.) So far things are going alright, although I've only been to one of my three class meetings. This semester should be much calmer than last, and if that's the case I will be a happy man.

Chad's considering getting a job with Deere Harvester in Moline, so if he does that I will officially be sans roommate. (Insert sad smiley here) Dan and Tim, if you're reading this, you guys need to come check on me every few days to make sure I haven't died and that my dead body isn't rotting away in this apartment all alone. (i.e., you need to take a break from your women and come hang out with your lonely bachelor friend, haha.)

If you want a good laugh, check out this spoof article: "Microsoft's AntiSpyware Tool Removes Internet Explorer." The title alone should be enough to at least make you laugh.

Madison Square Gordon

Ben Gordon once again lifted the Bulls, this time with a 13-point fourth quarter—including the game-winning shot—as the Bulls beat the Knicks yesterday afternoon. This marked their 7th straight game and 13th win in their last 16 games. Once again they came back in the fourth quarter to stun New York, this time scoring the final 7 points of the game. After starting the season 0-9, the Bulls are now one win away from a .500 record (17-18).

Ben Gordon is quickly becoming the go-to guy for the Bulls. He's scored something like 46 points in the last 3 fourth quarters and has made clutch shots all season long. He's really fun to watch. (And his teammates aren't bad, either!)

So I guesss you can say the Bulls beat the Knicks yesterday—in more ways than one!

Damn Tar Heels

That North Carolina-Wake Forest game was painful to watch as a Heels fan. The Deacons played great defense and totally took us out of our game, while we got into foul trouble, made bad passes, settled for the three-point shot, and generally got outhustled (especially on the boards). It's alright, we'll come back, but it's just frustrating to lay up such a stinker like that one.

Here's hoping the Bulls can take care of business tonight against the Knicks—that would be a huge win.

What 24 characters am I?

What 24 character are you?
You are MOST like MICHELLE DESSLER. You are intensely passionate and always follow your heart. You love deeply and will do whatever you can to help and protect the people you love. You are very caring and communicative. But you are not afraid to stand up for yourself when you have to and to make difficult choices in pursuit of your own code of ethics. You are thoroughly unpretentious and pure of heart.

What 24 villain are you?

You are MANDY. You are mysterious, sexy, seductive and a completely reliable professional. You will do whatever it takes to get the job done, get your money and get away clean, even if it means offing the person you love. You can be anything to anyone. It's always better if you do it yourself!

Should I be worried that all these quizzes keep pegging me as a woman? Oh well, I guess as long as I am "sexy" and "seductive" it's alright ;-)

-Mark

(Ninja edit: I guess what these quizzes mean is that, if you're a close friend of mine, you'd better hope I'm a good guy or you're in trouble!)

All quiet on the western front

So I'm back at NIU, enjoying my extra week off. Things are very slow around these parts, with most people still lounging at home. Therefore, there's nothing major to report to you, other than to waste your time telling you that while I'm not bored I'm also not exciting at the current moment.

You're welcome.

Pinch me...

...because I think I'm dreaming! I just got back to my apartment on campus, anticipating the beginning of the semester Monday morning. Then I found out from Chad that we get 5 weeks off for break this year instead of the usual 4. I'm definitely not complaining, though, and I plan to revel in the awesomeness of 7 extra days off.

* * *

After having a long talk with Mike about the rent vs. buy debate last Friday I went with Nick, Ahmad, and Jim to the Easy Street Pub on Saturday. I have to say that I was disappointed by that place. It could be that I've never been to a bar-only establishment before, but I did not enjoy all the smoke or the atmosphere of the place. The place is kind of a dump in my opinion and I would much rather go somewhere like the Cue-Rag or to a newer sports bar or club. I did enjoy seeing everybody there and chatting with them, though, so it definitely wasn't a total bust.

* * *

In what can only be described as a total surprise, it seems Randy Moss is still an asshole. (Oh wait, that's not a surprise at all!) Rest assured, I have no love for the Packers or their fans, but when he "mooned" the Lambeau Field faithful today I thought he went out of line. Yeah, I know that he didn't jump into the stands and start beating people up, but he just seems to go out of his way to act in a classless manner. I, for one, hope he never plays for the Bears or any other team I respect. (Those guidelines, of course, leaves him free to stay with Minnesota.)

In other sports news, Carlos Beltran spurned the Astros to sign with the Mets. This is great for the Cubs because it not only hurts Houston's offense but diminishes the chances of Roger Clemens returning in 2005. Here's hoping the Cubs sign Magglio to a one year, incentive-laden contract and use the financial flexibility he affords them over Beltran to make some mid-season moves, if necessary.

In the world of basketball, my two teams—the Bulls and the Tar Heels—are both playing well right now. I do not wish to jinx them, however, so I will just leave it at that.

* * *

Finally, after commenting on the premiere of Alias last Wednesday I have to do the same for 24. The first two hours aired on Sunday and they were spectacular! Lots of action, tension, and excitement so far and it looks like it will continue. Two more episodes are on tonight—can't wait! In related news, my mom wants to watch my DVDs of the show after reading good reviews for the new season in the newspaper, so I may have another convert. My sister also wants to borrow Alias, so that's two! As for myself, I borrowed my sister's copy of Felicity, which might seem odd until you realize it's a J.J. Abrams creation so it simply must be spectacular.

Speaking of which, I think I'll watch that now before hitting the sack. I'll probably be in bed at 4 AM, only 4 hours before I was supposed to wake up today before I found out I have no school. Life is grand!

This blog is not an endangered species!

I'm back, just like Alias. As you four readers of my blog know, I love the show and season 4 has started off well. Hopefully it can keep building momentum throughout the season.

Winter break is almost over, sadly. School begins anew next week, albeit without the heinous class that plagued the fall semester. Also no classes on Tuesday or Thursday, nor one on Saturday. We'll see how I like this schedule. I'm cautiously optimistic at this point.

Things have been kind of emo the last few days but I'll refrain from writing about that just yet because the situations have yet to resolve themselves fully. More details forthcoming.

That's it for now. Hey, I know it's not much, but it's better than what I've given you for the last two weeks so no complaining!
